Anne-Marie is a common blackbird (Turdus merula) who has chosen to build her nest under our porch roof. We don’t really know much about her, where she came from, what her favourite colour is, what films she likes… but we can make some good guesses.
It would seem she has a solid bladder, because I’ve seen her sat for long periods during rain with the gutter gurgling loudly around the nest. She may also be a young bird because she has chosen to nest right on the other side of the wall to Lukas’s speakers guaranteeing a daily dose of HipHop!
Anne-Marie may have a smoking problem, if not before then now for sure because she has chosen to nest on the smokers porch. On the other hand - she often has company, and you know how a smoking break between errands for worms or twigs takes the edge off your wings.
We don’t know what her boyfriends name is, but he seems a particularly dedicated guy, always around, bringing food, looking after the nest, but never ever getting a moment of rest… sound familiar? It seems birds do it just the same! ;-P
Adaptability
Anne-Marie doesn’t seem to be at all bothered by the webcam, or us occasionally hanging out on the porch or in the garden. She does sometimes take fright if we look too close, but mostly she’s content as long as we stay a meter or two away. She also seems to have adapted to our style of living, integrating pieces of rubbish in her nest.
Food
I mostly see her eating worms. I tried throwing one up to the nest, and while she seemed to eat away eagerly at it, I later found the hacked limp worm on the ground… I think she prefers food she dug out herself!
Brooding
I installed the webcam on the 13th of April, and since then she’s spent most of her time sitting in the nest. On the 18th I took a photo into the nest (you can’t see in without holding up a camera right above the nest), and there’s 5 eggs in there. According to the Wikipedia entry, they should hatch after 12-14 days, so I’m hoping to see hungry beaks any day now!
